As a result a of class action suit against Apple regarding the iPhone 4 antenna performance, the company will be reimbursing either $15 in cash or a bumper case to every U.S. resident owner of the phone who applies for either settlement.
You may remember back in June of 2010 some iPhone users complained of reception problems when the iPhone 4 was held in particular way. Apple responded with a fix to the problem by telling users, in part, to “avoid gripping it in the lower left corner in a way that covers both sides of the black strip in the metal band, or simply use one of many available cases.”
But according to CNET.com, 18 separate lawsuits, consolidated into one, argued that Apple was “misrepresenting and concealing material information in the marketing, advertising, sale, and servicing of its iPhone 4–particularly as it relates to the quality of the mobile phone antenna and reception and related software.”
As a result of the settlement, Apple has agreed to contact, by emails, original buyers of the iPhone 4 to inform them of settlement arrangements. In the coming weeks, a website, www.iPhone4Settlement.com will also inform customers about the settlement and how to apply for the cash or bumper case.
Ira Rothken, co-head counsel representing the class, told CNET, “We believe that the Apple iPhone 4 settlement is fair, adequate, and reasonable. We believe that it allows members of the class to choose, and they can get $15 of cash or a bumper, so we believe that type of choice is proportional to the circumstances.”
